Located in the heart of the Axarquia area of Malaga Province you will find one of Andalucia’s most beautiful attractions. Lake Viñuela is a stunning location that attracts thousands of visitors each year seeking an escape from the hustle and bussle of the coastal resorts. The lake is surrounded by some of the most stunning countryside in Andalucia

The lake is actually a man made reservoir and apart from been a great location for artists, photographers and those who take pleasure in the countryside it provides much needed water for the local area

Activities at the lake include boating {non-motorized only}, fishing and an inland beach area. There is a campsite near to the lake for the more adventuous holiday makers..
There is also a good selection of picnic areas which include BBQ facilities.

The lake is named after the nearby village of La Viñuela where you can get information about the lake and the facilities available. The village itself takes its name from the locally produced sweet wine and though small this village has some stunning archaeological sites near the village dating back to prehistoric, Roman and medieval times. and the church of San José, which dates back to the 16 th century with a superb 19 th century sculpture of the Pieta

The lake is surrouned by some other stunning little white villages such as Alcaucín, with its wonderfull restored Moorish fountain, La Fuente de San Sebastian and a 16th century church and a hermitage. Not far from Alcaucín, you are able to visit the facinating remains of an ancient Moorish town, Zalia.

Other villages in the area include Periana, which is located on the River Guaro, the river that provides the sourse of water for the reservoir .

This village has a natural water source has attracted settlers since prehistoric times but is probally most famous or infamous for the damage and loss of life suffered in the terrible earthquake of 1884.

Nearby you will find the villages of Benamagosa, Riogordo and Comares which is famous for its olive Oil
