Wyns barAt the top of a sun drenched hill in Benalmadena just off the 340 highway, lies an attractive little pub which was originally named after the owner, who also set up the small corner store opposite which provides the type of English produce not readily available in Spain prior to the advent of stores such as Iceland, Onestop or the cleverly named Spainsburys etc. With the mountains as a backdrop, the bar is neatly positioned to overlook the traditional Spanish white villas which dominate the area.

As you approach the pub, there is a small seating area outside where you can soak up the sun whilst enjoying your bottle of San Miguel. Here you may notice an old fashioned looking sign indicating a post box attached to the outside wall. Maybe it’s just me but this always struck me as a little odd as whilst the sign survives there is no evidence of any post box no matter how hard you look. In fact, it’s been known to confuse may an unwitting holidaymaker as they innocently search for the post box clutching their postcards. This piece of paraphernalia is actually a relic dating back to when post used to be collected here.

The establishment has recently undergone a total refurbishment and the décor is now a pleasant mix of creams and greens throughout. A welcome addition to the furniture is a set of sumptuous cream leather sofas strewn with cushions to create a cosy at home feel to the place. Previously, there were simply uncomfortable wicker chairs and tables so this is a definite improvement. However, this depends on your view point as this is predominantly a male drinking hole and men tend to prefer to prop up the bar on high stools so the sofas are an obvious feminine touch. Adjacent to the pool table is the dining area which holds approx 8 tables where you can readily enjoy the food on offer. Whilst the bar is not huge inside, the new decor has resulted in an attractive, intimate feel to the place.

Back in its heyday, this drinking spot used to be the local for the infamous Ronnie Knight as he was known to have occupied one of the mansions off the Urbanisation Cappellania. Anybody familiar with the Roger Cook program may recall the episode, recently reshown on tv, where Roger tracked him down in this very bar when they were filming a documentary on the seamier side of life in the Costa del Sol. Another celebrity known to have frequented this bar was the well loved actress Barbara Windsor, best known for her cheeky antics in the Carry on films and more recently as Peggy Mitchell in the British soap Eastenders.

Wyn’s bar remains very much a locals bar interspersed with newcomers who are holidaying in one of the many villas for rent in this area and provides a little slice of home with its sky sports, karaoke evenings, quiz nights and typical English grub.
