This popular course, situated within the municipality of Benalmadena, was opened in 1976. It was designed by Jose Pepe Gancedo, who was one of the most promising golfers in Spain at the time. Torrequebrada quickly established itself as one of the top courses on the Costa del Sol and was the venue for the 1979 Spanish Open. It was even reputed to have been a favourite of Bing Crosby, although the singer could not have played here many times as he died the year after Torrequebrada opened!
In recent years Torrequebrada has received some criticism regarding the condition of its fairways and greens, with several golfers claiming the course was relying heavily on its former reputation. In response to the critics Torrequebrada’s management has carried out a number of improvements, including a new irrigation system. The clubhouse and changing rooms have also been updated.
The course itself is short and very tight in places, having been squeezed into a relatively small area. There are no fewer than eight doglegs and plenty of other hazards to contend with, including lakes, trees, strategically positioned bunkers and inclined greens. The fairways vary from hole to hole. Torrequebrada is recommended for experienced players, with accurate tee shots being of prime importance.
One of the most interesting holes on the course is the 3rd (par 3) which, although it is short, features a very steep drop from the tee to the green. If you find yourself struggling here you may console yourself with the fact that Seve Ballesteros once scored a 7 here. The 11 (par 3) is also one of the course’s toughest holes, with a green on two levels which is protected by both water and bunkers.
Facilities
The refurbished clubhouse has a bar-restaurant on the first floor which overlooks the green on the 18th. In addition there is a pro shop, driving range and putting green.
How to get to Torrequebrada
Exit the N340 coast road as you approach the Hotel Torrequebrada to the west of Benalmadena Costa. At the roundabout on the northern side of the N340, opposite the hotel, take the Avenida Europa for about 100 metres uphill to the next roundabout. Turn right here into the Avenida Ronda del Golf Oeste and follow this road past the school and the Marina Golf apartments for about 3km until you reach the entrance to the course.
