The town of Torre Del Mar (English - Tower of the Sea) is a beautiful coastal resort with a population of approx 20,000, 28 km east of Malaga and 20km west of Nerja in the Axarquia region of Malaga province. It lies in a sedimentary plain surrounded by fields of crops. The Traditional crop around here was sugar cane but nowadays more and more farmers are converting to mangoes, avocados, kiwis and salad crops.
In recent years however the town has turned its attention to tourism and although this town is not as well known as its nearby neighbor of Nerja or the ever popular resorts of Fuengirola , Benalmádina and Torremolinos in the western Costa del Sol by foreign tourists it is very popular the Spanish holiday makers during July and August and has some stunning beaches and a good infrastructure of bars restaurants and hotels.
The town has wide sandy beaches flanked by a long beachfront promenade , considered by many as one of the best promenades on the Costa Del Sol and a small avenue and park from the beginning of the century.It also benefits from pretty views along the coast and of the hills and mountains behind dotted with white houses and villages. A 500 metre seafront stretch, called El Copo, is a continual line of bars and discotheques which are open until 6.00h every morning in the summer and at weekends during the winter. During The Summer months there is a night market open until 3.00h every morning situated along an adjoining stretch of the seafront.
During the summer the tower blocks, hotels bars and discos heave with holiday makers with the population of the town population swelling to 150,000 between June and September. During the winter the town takes on a more tranquil tone although more and
more people are visiting this area during the winter months.
Situated 2km east of the main resort you will find La Caleta de Velez, a working fishing port and marina. This area has not yet been developed as a tourist attraction but there is a good selection of bar/restaurants to the right of the port entrance.
The scenary along the coast is stunning and one of the best ways to view it is from the sea. You can enjoy this views plus get a chance to spot dolphins and other marine life with The Caleta Cruise Club that offers cruises for parties of up to 10 people which includes free drinks and tapas.
The towns most important and popular festival takes places its most popular on the 16th July, in honour of the Virgen del Carmen. It consists of a candle ceremony and maritime procession and the celebrations go on till the early hours.
Torre del Mar is well positioned along the coast to visit many of the Costa Del Sol most popular tourist attractions including Granada, Seville and Malaga plus the stunning countryside of the Axarquia region The nearest City is that of Valez - Malaga which has a good section of historical buildings, some good restaurants and even a hughe shopping centre where you will find a good collection of goods ranging from clothing and electrical goods food and drink.
