Although many visitors to the coast will have spent a day or more at the races in their home country and some may have attended an evening meeting, few will have even considered the possibility of a night at the races, but that’s just what is on offer at the Hipodromo de Costa del Sol where during the summer months Saturday meetings commence as late as 2200hrs under floodlights. Lying between Fuengirola and La Cala just off the N340, this racecourse has, since its construction was completed in 2000, grown into the largest leisure complex on the coast.
Facilities available at the Hipodromo include:
- Two all-weather tracks for racing.
- Tiered grandstand accommodation with both sea and mountain views providing for 5000 race-goers plus seating at the trackside for a further 5000.
- Show jumping and dressage facilities.
- Stabling for up to 650 horses with training and jumping paddocks.
- A five-star residential hotel with bars, restaurants, souvenir shop, swimming pool and gymnasium. plus kennelling for accompanying dogs.
- A riding school for adults and children including children with special needs.
- An athletics track and a football pitch with seating for 800 spectators.
- Live concerts and function/hospitality facilities.
- A shopping centre and an amusement arcade with a variety of games for children.
- A show of Flamenco dancing.
- In addition to summer racing there is a winter season, uncommon amongst Spanish courses.
- Licensed betting is available on course.
The Hipodromo offers an excellent family day out with attractions for both old and young. The ticket price is a mere 5 Euros with those under 18 and over 65 granted free access. There is likewise no charge for parking.

1I used to love going to the Hipodromo at La Cala on Sunday afternoons but nowadays nobody seems to know when it the races are being held or at what times? Any news of the winter race dates?
