Mijas Pueblo

Being lucky enough to live near Mijas Pueblo, it is true to say that some of the best exhibitions, ferias and festivals take place in the village, without us even realising it.

Local artist and photographer, Julia de Vere Mcllroy, who has lived in the pueblo for 8 years, is currently displaying her work at the Casa Museo in the centre of the village. Such is the cleverness of this artist, and her attention to detail, the photographs almost come to life. The beauty of Julia´s work is its realism, and the images are stunning.

As a member of the Royal Photographic Society, and having formerly worked for top fashion magazines, Vogue and Harpers, in London and New York, Julia certainly knows her stuff. Having exhibited photography all over the world, this is very much a personal display of her favourite photographs, taken in Oman, Venice and Spain.
Having lived in Oman, the artist captures beautifully the essence and atmosphere of this Middle Eastern Sultanate. My particular favourite is the image of the Omani market, showing the hustle and bustle of the local tradesmen in their white dishdashas and kummahs, as the early sun rays beam through the trees. Equally atmospheric, and almost haunting, is the image taken during winter time in Venice. A lone gondolier seems to appear out of the mist, impervious to the cold weather as he steers his craft. Closer to home, the image of the Barrio Santana in the rain, which is the street where Julia lives in Mijas-Pueblo, showcases the artist´s clever and visually stunning style.

Last but not least is the incredible photograph showing the reflections in a shop window, of two nuns walking along the street in Seville. At first glance the image of the nuns is not apparent, but their figures seem to appear almost ghost-like in their black habits and head dresses.

The photographs are priced between €120 and €150, and many have already been sold.

Mijas-Pueblo is a richer place for this exhibition, and Julia should be congratulated for bringing such incredible images to the village.
