The Andalucian capital of Seville is probably the best place for visitors who want to enjoy the traditional celebrations of Semana Santa {Holy Week} .
Like the other towns and villages across Spain the Andalucian capital has many events celebrating the event which is planned down to the last detail with preperations the year before
This year’s celebrations promise to be bigger and more lavish than last as the local people try to better their effots of the previous years.
During the week the main participants who belong to groups know as The Cofradías (Brotherhoods or Fraternities) take part in numours parades known as penitence through the narrow streets of Seville.
The routes of these parades take these groups , from their church to the Cathedral and back, taking the shortest possible route. This tradition was decreed in the rule of the ordinances by Cardenal Niño de Guevara in the 17th century
The week’s events start on the 16th of March on Palm Sunday {Known As Domingo de Ramos} and during the week 57 Cofradías or brotherhoods take part in the events paying their yearly religious visit to the stunning Catherdral of Seville.
The following Sunday is Easter Sunday {Know As Domingo de Resurrección} sees the culmination of a week’s religious celebration
During the processions in which most of the brotherhoods provide two floats you are able to enjoy some of the most lavish and beautiful costumes and designs. These brotherhoods spend the whole year making sure that every detail of their floats are perfect.
More than One Million People are expected to attend the most important events during the week and over 60,000 members of the 57 brotherhoods are going to take part in this years events
There are events right across the whole city during the holiday week. One of the most important is the early morning of Good Friday when some of the largest brotherhoods head for the Cathedral for their processional penitence.
These brotherhoods include those of el Silencio, el Gran Poder, La Macarena, El Calvario, La Esperanza de Triana and los Gitanos.
