Santa Maria is generally regarded as a slightly ‘easier’ course that is suitable for players with higher handicaps. It is especially popular with tour groups has everyone should be able to go back to the clubhouse with a reasonable score. Every hole has its own characteristics and there are a variety of hazards to consider, including water, ravines, slopes and bunkers. The large and greens are fast and well-maintained and many tees are elevated. The course is situated at the top of a valley from where there are superb views along the coastline. Although the Santa Maria is relatively short, several holes have substantial climbs, especially on the way out. The path between the 5th green and 6th tee is particularly steep and a buggy is essential.
The first hole is relatively straightforward, although the tee shot needs to clear a lake. The 7th hole (par 3) has an elevated tee, while the 8th (par 5) has a dogleg and water running along the right-hand side of the fairway. The spectacular 11th hole (par 4) is played from the highest part of the course. Here you must avoid the lake and the several bunkers which protect the green. The 13th hole is a long par 5 where you need to hit a good tee-shot to clear the ravine, while another hole which requires a good long drive is the par 4 16th. The closing hole is also one of the trickiest on the course, with a water hazard to the front and left, and you must also avoid the ‘out of bounds’ on the right.
The first 9 holes at Santa Maria were designed by Antonio Garcia Garrido. The back nine, which were added later, were designed by the club’s technical staff. A maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for women is required at Santa Maria
Santa Maria is notable for its fine clubhouse, converted from a 19th century finca, which has a bar, restaurant and lounge. There is also a new restaurant next to the first tee. Unfortunately Santa Maria suffers from a lack of practice facilities.
How to Get to Santa Maria
Exit the main N340 coast road at the Don Carlos turn-off, around 10km (6 miles) east of Marbella. The course is about 1.3km north of the N340.
