The City of Sanlúcar de Barrameda (also know as Sanlúcar) is located at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River in the province of Cadiz The City is know as a departure point for many of Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan as well as other famous Spanish conquistadors (English - Conqueror, the term used to refer to the soldiers, explorers and adventurers) .It was also the arrival point in 1522 of the last surviving ship in Magellan which was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe.
Tourism plays an important part of the Cities daily life and it is well know as one of Spain´s better know sherry producing towns along with Jerez de la Frontera and El Puerto de Santa Maria and there are many wine cellars in the city thean can be visited. It is also known as a seaside town and has magnificent beaches stretching several kilometres to the south-west of the city.
One attraction that should not be missed are the horse racing events that take place every August where the riders race along the beach at the mouth of the river just before sunset. These races are contested at distances of 1500m and 1800m and are among the oldest events of this type in Europe and the city was the site of the first ever regulated horse races in Spain
For the lovers of seafood the city area known as the Baja de Guia the former port and fishing quarter is the place to head for where you can find some fine seafood restaurants.
The area know as Barrio Alto and the newer area of Barrio Baja are where you can find some of the Cities most interesting sites can be found .These include the 15th century Castle of Santiago, The Palace of the Infantes Of Orleans And Borbón know used as City Hall. Other impressive buildings include the 16th Century Convent of Santo Domingo and The Palace of the Dukes of Sidonia where you will find the municipal archives.
Events such as the Feria de La Mananilla in late may/early June, a lively fair that’s dedicated to Manzanilla, the special dry style of Sherry that may only be produced in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. More than 120,000 lights are used in the event, which features traditional rides and horse races, and the Sanluúcar Tapas Fair a local gastronomy competition, this is a Tapas extravaganza where locals hand out their best produce to visitors from hundreds of stands in the town’s main street.
The Sanlúcar Antiques Fair & International Festival of Music held during the month of August is another great time to visit the city where antiques take centre stage in the first half of August, followed by musical festivities throughout the town in the second half. The region’s own musical heritage plays a major role alongside classical, jazz and modern styles. Also during August you can enjoy the Guadalquivir River Festival at which visitors and locals alike can enjoy boat races, watersports and festivities on the banks of the river
Another good reason for visiting The City is its position at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River making it a convenient base to explore the nearby Doñana National Park (Parque Nacional de Doñana).Within the park lies the Marisma de Hinojos (Salt Marsh of Fennel Plants), which as many believe could be the site of the lost city of Atlantis.It is also widly believed that within the precincts of the park is the likely site of another lost city, Tartessos , the capital of an ancient cizilization that predated the Phoenicians in Iberia.
Like Many Spanish Towns And Cities In Andalucia Golf is becoming more and more popular with locals and visitors alike and the The Sanlucar de Barrameda golf course is located in the Lomas de Martin Miguel, opposite the Donaña National Park (nature reserve) and very close to where the Guadalquivir River enters the Atlantic Ocean.
