There are numerous fairs and festivals right across Andalucia throughout the year celebrating all number of things from patron saints to rock festivals
Coming up in the next couple of weeks are two fairs that show the diversity of the celebrations that can be found in Andalucia.
Coming up first in September
The inland town of Cartama is a traditional and very picturesque whitewashed town which is located just 17km away from Málaga and is well worth a visit at any time but on the 24 and 25th September this charming Andalucian town is playing host to an event that has been taking place since 1590 when it was granted a Royal Charter during the rule of King Philip II.
The Cartama cattle fair attracts visitors not just across Andalucia but from all around Spain. It takes place next to Colegio La Mata on the road that connects Cártama to Alhaurín El Grande and despite the changing times the fair still retains its traditional flair and is a great day out for all the family and gives the visitor a real insight into the world of cattle farming.
The fair itself is now divided into sections which is better for all and makes the experience even better.
The first section is for the animals which although the fair is cattle fair include horses, donkeys and mules while the second section is for the purchase of tacks and fittings.
You can also find a host of other services on display such as vets, fumigators, and straw bale providers as well as blacksmiths and sheepshearers showing of their skills

Then between the 4 to 11 October in the stunning Andalucian village of Totalán which is located in the stunning countryside halfway between the Montes de Málaga {Malaga Mountains} and the Axarquía region of the Malaga province you can join the locals as they celebrate their cultural week
The highlight of the week long celebrations is the religious festival which pays tribute to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario the local Patroness
During the week there will be a whole host of activities including exhibitions, lectures, games, parades, competitions, food samplings, theatre plays, concerts, workshops, sports competitions, and street shows and a wonderful flower offering to the Virgen del Rosario.
If you do go along to the festival be sure to sample the local dishes such as fried pumpkin, tomato soup, “gazpachuelo,” chickpea stew, and “salmorejo.”
Please contact the local Town Hall for more information

As I said at the beginning there are numerous fairs and festivals right across Andalucia and these two may not be as big as the huge Malaga fair or as colorful as the spring fair in Seville but sometimes it’s nice to head for the smaller towns and villages that adorn the Andalucian countryside.
