Rio Real, benefits from a spectacular location in an attractive valley which slopes gently down towards the sea. The parkland-type course, which has been in existence for over 40 years, is the work of Javier Arana, who was one of Spain’s greatest designers. It takes its name from the river which winds its way through the fairways and which also plays a significant role in several of the holes. Golfers shouldn’t experience too many problems, and the generally flat nature of the course means that it is fairly easy to walk. In recent years several improvements have been made, including new greens, replanted fairways and a refurbished clubhouse. The course is also notable for the immaculate condition of the tees, fairways and greens. All this does not come cheap though – Rio Real has a reputation for having expensive green fees – although golfers who have experienced the pleasures of this scenic course usually make the decision to return.

Many who have played at Rio Real regard the 11th hole as the most spectacular on the course. To reach the green from the elevated tee you must cross both a ravine and a stream. The fourth hole, which is accessed via a subway underneath the main coast road, is also very attractive, with its fairway running down to the beach. You have to play blind over a slope at the 5th (par 4) as you make your way back up from the beach. The 6th hole (par 3), which has numerous bunkers, requires a precise shot to avoid the hillside on the right-hand side. There is a pronounced dogleg at the 10th hole (par 4), while the par 5 13th, which is the longest on the course, is another spectacular hole.

A handicap certificate is not required at Rio Real.

Facilities
Rio Real has many of the facilities that are expected of a top course, including a clubhouse with bar and restaurant, pro shop, driving range and putting green. Golf lessons are also available.

How to Get to Rio Real
Rio Real is fairly easy to get to as it is situated right next to the main N340 coast road, just a couple of miles east of Marbella. Exit the N340 at Torre de Rio Real and head northwards following the signs to the golf course.
