Plots as large as this rarely come up for sale in Andalucia. This huge L-shaped expanse of land, around 4-km long and about 630 hectares or 6.300.000.- square meters in area, is situated amongst lovely scenery within Huelva province, close to the border with Portugal. It is currently classified as rustic land, although the local town hall has said it would be beneficial to reclassify the land for tourism use, which would allow low-density residential development. The property, known as ‘Zurita’, currently consists of woodland, pasture land, crops and scrubland. A worker’s cottage is contained within the land.
Location
The land is situated near the village of Paymogo which is in the district of Andevalo. Paymogo is about 96km (60 miles) north-west of the city of Huelva, and around 66km (41 miles) from the motorway linking Seville with Portugal. The main A493 road between Rosal de la Frontera and Valverde is also about 15km (9 miles) away. There are ambitious plans for a new highway between Seville and Lisbon which would give direct access to Paymogo. The nearest airports to the property are Faro in Portugal (120km/75 miles) and Seville (220km/137 miles).
Huelva Province
Huelva is the westernmost province in Andalucia, notable for its varied landscape. About 35-minutes south of the property is the Atlantic coastline with some amazing beaches, especially the 12-km stretch of golden sand at Isla Cristina, backed by dune and pine forests. The city of Huelva is an historically important destination with its many links to Christopher Columbus. It was from Huelva that the explorer set off on his first voyage to the New World. To the north of the province is the mountainous natural park of the Sierra de Aracena, much of which is densely forested. Within the park is the village of Jabugo, famous for its high quality Jamon Iberico hams which are produced from pigs fed solely on acorns.
Andevalo
The plot of land is situated in the district of Andevalo, occupying an area across the centre of Huelva province. Andevalo is characterised by rolling hills and oak tree forests, interspersed with rural whitewashed villages surrounded by parcels of agricultural land. This part of Andalucia is still relatively undeveloped, although the local government wishes to stimulate tourism growth with ambitious plans to improve the area’s infrastructure.
Paymogo
In the north-west of the Andevalo district, just 5km (3 miles) from the border with Portugal, is the small local town of Paymogo, home to around 1,200 inhabitants. This relatively isolated community is notable for its 17th century church with its unusual bell tower. About a 20-minute drive from the property is the Spanish port of Sanlucar de Guadiana. It’s possible to sail along the River Guadiana from here to the Atlantic Ocean near Ayamonte.
At just over one euro pr square meter this large piece of land is definitely a bargain.
