Andalucia has many great museums dedicated to a wide range of people and activities. One of the most important opened in Malaga on the 27 October 2003 when a museum dedicated to one of Malaga’s favorite son Pablo Picasso opened its doors to the public for the first time.

The museum is probably the most important museum in the world dedicated to the work of Picasso as it is in the birth town of the famous artist and sculptor.

The museum became a reality thanks to donations from the artists oldest son’s widow Christine Ruiz-Picasso, who gave 133 pieces of work 14 paintings, 9 sculptures, 44 drawings, a sketchbook from the Royan series containing a further 36 drawings, 58 engravings and 7 ceramic pieces and 22 pieces from the artists grandson Bernard. It is also due to the tireless work of the Autonomous Government of Andalucia who wished to build a museum devoted to an artist whose styles and techniques changed the course of modern art.

The museum is constantly holding exhibits of Picasso’s work and it is best to check with the museum what exhibitons are currently on.

It is a perfect day out for lovers of the artists work and is a great place for all the family and makes a pleasant and relaxing escape from the summer heat.

There is a excellent Library and Document Center which was set up researchers and students ineterested in the life and work of Picasso. There is an excellent a reading room, an on-line catalogue and facilities for laptops with Internet connection.

Included in the collection you will find a hugh collection of work dedicated to Picasso including the Bernardo Sofovich Collection (800 titles on Picasso), the Fondo de Arte Contemporáneo Español (12.000 documents) and the Archivo Temboury (formed by the correspondence maintained between Juan Temboury and Jaime Sabartés from 1953 to 1964)
