When visiting the Cordoba Province of Andalucia you should take the time to visit the small picturesque town of Montalbán de Córdoba which is located 42 km away from Córdoba, the Capitol of the province.
Although this town is small, it has just 4,500 inhabitants the history of the town dates back to prehistoric times and exibits of pottery from this era can be seen in the archaeological museum of Cordoba.
One of the main attractions of the town are the ruins and a catacomb from the 4th and 5th century that can be found in the nearby town of Tentecarreta 2 from the town.. The galleries found here are a catacomb which were rare in the Roman empire , and the catacomb of Montalban are only in Spain. The Tentecarreta have two cross galleries oriented according to the cardinal points The galleries are narrow and tortuous and sadly the state of the galleries is very eroded due to humidity, collapses and frequent mud slides over the centuries In the south gallery you will find a collective burial shelter which is very important and in the east gallery you will find remains lying in the foetal position and also artifacts such as plates necklaces nad copper money.
As you enter the town you will see that it has some interesting buildings to explore including the Santa María de Gracia Church which is a parish church situated in the Andalucia’s square, in front of the town hall. The church is oval, and it is made of brick. The church have a little altar dedicated to the Inmaculada, pieces of baroque altarpiece and ruins of the old church The originally church dates from the 14th century however this was demolished in 1964. Some of the oprignally features still remain though and the main alter dates from 1724
Other notable buildings in the town include the Madre de Dios Hermitage dating from the 16th century ; the library and The culture house both of which are modern buildings but play an important role in town life.
Probably the most important attraction the town has to offer is “El Calvario” is in the south of Montalbán, now inside the confines of the town inside although at first it was located outside the town when the town was smaller. The first Calvario hermitage was a small church in the outside of the town sitated along with old castle ruins. The first hermitage was built in 1590 approximately. The current church, was built on 1690 and it has had several reforms since then . The current style is that of the 18th century, and the dome was built in 1850. The style is neoclassic, with a impressive dome and belfry.
Although it is only small it does make an interesting day out and a good escape from the hustle of the city if you are staying in Córdoba .so why not hire a car and take a drive out. The countryside is beautiful and you will enjoy the hospitality of very friendly locals
