Only fifteen minutes from Marbella is Monda Castle, a magnificent fairytale-like fortress that sits atop a craggy cliff. Built on Arab fortifications and boasting distinct Moorish architecture, Monda Castle is arguably one of the most fascinating buildings in Andalucia. Not only is it a place of historical interest – before the Romans, the castle was an important settlement and garrison, and later a place of sanctuary for the Muslims – but Monda Castle has become the site of a contemporary luxury hotel and restaurant. That’s not to say that it’s lost any of its authentic charm, however. In fact, the hotel and restaurant have both embraced the castle’s architecture, and have made every effort to preserve its original atmosphere.
The hotel itself can accommodate 75 guests, meaning the castle never feels crowded, even if it is fully booked. From the moment guests check in at the helpful reception desk, a stay at Monda Castle is anything but the ordinary. Those staying feel like they are transformed to another world, where the stresses of modern life melt away and the only thing they are left with is peace and tranquillity. As guests glide up the winding stairwells towards their accommodations, they feel like they’re experiencing a piece of history first-hand and are privileged to be doing so.
While the castle offers double rooms from as little as 105-euros per night, it can accommodate those looking for something a little extra special in large apartments, complete with private sun terraces and romantic outdoor Jacuzzis. These start at just 2,750-euros per week, while smaller apartments with private gardens and patios cost 1,950-euros per week. For a true fairytale experience, however, guests are advised to book an entire tower for themselves (guests should be warned that climbing down a castle tower on their own hair is dangerous, and should only be attempted by professional Rapunzels!).
The El Castillo restaurant at Monda Castle is another reason to pay a visit. As with everything else, dining at the castle is a glamorous, over-the-top affair. A banquet-style food hall awaits guests, complete with á la carte and lunch menus. Highly recommended is the fresh foie gras for a sumptuous starter, and the fillet of ostrich for a mouth-watering main. In the summer, guests can enjoy their meal al fresco, and unwind afterwards in the stylish bar with one of the many cocktails or fine liquors on offer. Room service is also available for those requiring a little more privacy.
With a picture-postcard setting and all the amenities any bride-and groom-to-be could ever possibly want, Monda Castle has become a favourite for weddings and special events. The El Castillo restaurant can cater for parties of up to 120 people, while the castle itself can sleep 75 of them. Monda Castle even has a team of on-hand wedding specialists who’ll help those tying the knot with their big day, including putting them in touch with the local clergy and guiding them through the legal paperwork, to menu and table planning.
The facilities at Monda Castle are everything guests would expect them to be, and so much more; manicured gardens leading down to a large outdoor swimming pool with poolside service; a cosy library stacked with books and a roaring open fireplace; and nearby horse riding, golf course, clay pigeon shooting, archery, trekking, quad biking and paint-balling facilities available.
