For those on the Costa del Sol who don’t feel like playing the full 18 holes, there are also plenty of 9-hole courses to choose from, including three situated within the municipality of Marbella
La Dama de Noche
If you have never played a round of golf in the middle of the night before, then here is your chance. La Dama de Noche is Spain’s first ever floodlit course, with all the lighting carefully placed to ensure there are no shadows. Despite being only a 9-hole course, La Dama is a par 36. There is no rough, but there are a couple of lakes and a river which affect most of the holes. The course is fairly short but a good test for golfers of all abilities. You must pre-book if you want to play at night-time. La Dama is situated close to Puerto Banus, at the bottom of Marbella’s renowned ‘Golf Valley’. Official website: golfladamadenoche.com
Monte Paraiso
This is a fairly new course, situated on the lower slopes of La Concha Mountain, which boasts some fine views of the Mediterranean from the immaculately-maintained fairways. Monte Paraiso offers plenty of variety, with wide greens, lakes and hills. There is also a putting green. The course is situated just north of the A-7 motorway, a little to the east of the suburb of Nagueles.
Greenlife Golf
Greenlife is one of Marbella’s little gems, set within the cork trees and oaks of the lovely Elvira Hills. The course’s varied terrain provides a good test for all abilities. Notable holes include the first, which rises up to a narrow green surrounded by trees, and the second, whose small green is bordered by both trees and water. Another tough hole is the seventh, which requires an accurate tee shot to avoid both the bunkers which protect the right of the green, and the trees on the left of the fairway. The longest hole on the course is the ninth, where you need to avoid ‘out of bounds’ on the left, and bunkers either side of the two-tiered green. Greenlife boasts some excellent facilities including a golf academy, driving range, putting green, and the El Lago restaurant. The course is situated a couple of kilometres north of the Elvira turn-off from the N340 coast road. Official website: greenlife-golf.com
La Resina
This well-designed course, situated on the Resina estate close to Estepona, is generally regarded as being one of the best nine-hole courses in Spain. It has a challenging layout with both par 3’s and par 4’s, and has a varied terrain and several lakes. Facilities include putting green, Pro Shop, snack bar and golf lessons. La Resina is situated about 1km to the north of the N340. Take the Selwo exit at kilometre 162.5 and follow the signs to the Resina estate. Official website: laresina.net
Magna
This course is situated in ‘Golf Valley’ close to Puerto Banus, and comprises two par 4’s and seven par 3’s. It has a quite a long layout and, although Magna was intended for all levels of golfer, it is a good choice for beginners. There are fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and the excellent facilities include a clubhouse, Pro Shop and gym. The restaurant is very popular and worth a visit for both lunch and dinner.

La Siesta
This private club, which welcomes visiting golfers, is situated in Calahonda a few miles east of Marbella. The par-3 course, designed by Enrique Canales, is excellent for players wishing to practice their short game and is notable for the variation of distances from tee to green – which ranges from 51 metres at the first hole up to 175 metres at the seventh. Facilities include driving range, putting green and clubhouse. Tlf. +34 952 933 362.
El Soto
This short par-3 course is located on the El Soto urbanisation about 10km east of Marbella. It is particularly suitable for both beginners and more advanced players wishing to sharpen up their short game. There are plenty of hazards to contend with, such as lakes, steep slopes and gullies. Along with the driving range and putting green, the El Soto Club boasts other leisure facilities including tennis courts, gym and spa. Official website: elsotoclubdegolf.com
Casares
This newly-opened course is situated just to the west of Estepona and boasts some fine mountain and sea views. It is notable for its modern design with narrow fairways and large greens. The fourth hole (par 5) is the most beautiful on the course, with water surrounding the green, while the most difficult is probably the 7th (par 5), which will challenge even the most proficient of golfers. Facilities at Casares include Pro Shop, clubhouse and restaurant.
