Los Naranjos is one of the trio of championship courses, the others being Aloha and Las Brisas, situated in ‘Golf Valley‘ near the resort of Marbella. The famous designer, Robert Trent Jones Sr, considered this course, which was opened in 1977, to be one of his masterpieces. Recently the greens have been completely overhauled after falling into disrepair a few years ago. Today, Los Naranjos is a well-maintained course which is recapturing its former glory.
Los Naranjos has many features that are typical of a Robert Trent Jones design, such as long tees, wide fairways and undulating greens. Golfers playing at Los Naranjos are given the option to play it safe and ‘lay up’, or be more ambitious and risk getting caught out by the numerous water hazards and bunkers which protect the greens. The course is suitable for all levels.
The biggest feature of Los Naranjos is the contrast between the front nine, with its water hazards and difficult contours, and the less interesting (some golfers describe it as dull) back 9, which is much flatter. On the inward 9 you will play through the orange groves from which Los Naranjos takes its name.
One of the most difficult holes is the 18th, a long par 5, featuring an elevated green in front of the club house, complete with water hazard and palm trees to the left. The 12th (par 3) is another outstanding hole, with the green protected by a couple of large bunkers on the left, and a pond on the right. Other notable holes include the first, a short par 3, with a dogleg to the right leading to an elevated green, and the fifth (par 5), with another elevated green, plus a water hazard on the left.
Please note there is a maximum handicap requirement at Los Naranjos of 28 for men and 36 for ladies.
Los Naranjos is well-known for its lovely club house, completed in 1991, which is well-equipped with a golf shop, restaurant, café and locker rooms. There is also a large putting green which is illuminated at night.
