Situated within the municipality of Alhuarin de la Torre, around 12km from Malaga Airport, is this friendly golfing complex. It has been constructed on former farmland at around over 300 metres above sea level. Consequently there are some magnificent views over the Mediterranean from the fairways. The original 18 holes, which opened in 1992, were designed by Falco Nardi, although sadly he died during the construction of the course. A further nine holes were added in 2003. An unusual feature of Lauro Golf is that all the holes on the ‘old’ course have been named after famous Spanish bullfighters.
Lauro is a fairly flat, parkland-type course, in which the layout fully utilises the natural contours of the land. There are plenty of narrow fairways, many of which are set between lines of olive trees, so accurate drives are important. There are also numerous large bunkers dotted around, plus several lakes which provide a haven for wild birds. Environmental concerns are taken very seriously at Lauro Golf, with the club’s director planning to plant several thousand trees within the course’s boundaries.
The latest 9 holes, which tend to have wider and longer fairways than on the original course, were designed by Mariano Benitez. On this section you will find Lauro’s new signature hole, the 26th (par 3), which has a raised tee on the hillside offering fantastic views towards the Mediterranean beyond the valley of Guadalhorce. Another spectacular hole is the 21st (par 3), on which a pretty waterfall cascades down into the lake. The designer has positioned several bunkers behind the green to trap those who go too long. On the 24th (par 4) you will find the widest fairway on the entire course, although it is out of bounds on the left-hand side. The green can be quite tricky to read as well.
Facilities
The clubhouse at Lauro, which has been converted from an 18th century farmhouse, contains a lovely open-air restaurant. There is also a driving range and putting green. Golf lessons are available.
