The beautiful town of Láujar de Andarax is located on the edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park overlooking the Río Andarax river plain in the province of Almeria. Its location in this stunning area makes the village an idea base for people who want to visit the national park.
The Plaza Mayor (Main Square) in the village is home to the stunning town hall which is housed in an beautiful 18th Century building. One of the best features of the sqaure is the18th century Fuente de los Cuatro Caños, one of several fountains that can be found in the village
Other notable buildings in the village include the 18th-century Iglesia de la Encarnación, built over the site of a mosque, with a Mudéjar tower, and the ruins of the Moorish citadel that once covered over 3ksqm of the villages territory
Visitors to the village should try some of the locally produced wine in either one of the bars located along the cobbled streets of the village or even head for the bodega Valle de Láujar.
Leaving the village itself you should head for the area known as El Nacimiento, a beautiful picnic spot situated at the source of the Andarax river just 1km from the village itself. Here you will find a pleasent bar , along with picnic benches and barbecue pits all located in theb tranquil woodland setting of poplars, willows, ash trees and pines.
Here you will find some pleasent short walks including the woodland walk up the mountain to the Sendero Monterrey and the campsite here.
Along the C332 road to Alcora you wuill find the visitors centre where you can get information about the village and the walks around the area.
The village is small but there are a few nice hotels in the area and for those looking for a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the coatal resorts of Andalucia
