Las Brisas Golf is arguably one of the best golf courses in Andalucia, and one of several that are situated in Marbella’s famous golf valley. It has hosted several important tournaments since it opened in 1968, including the 1973 World Cup and the Spanish Open in 1983 and 1987, the latter of which was won by Nick Faldo. The course was also a candidate to host the 1997 Ryder Cup, but was passed over in favour of Valderrama.
Las Brisas has also been popular with celebrities such as Sean Connery and ex-England manager Kevin Keegan. Another fan is the American golfer Paul Azinger who maintains that it is one of the best courses he has played on. Las Brisas was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, soon after he had completed another of his masterpieces at Sotogrande. The great designer was innovative in his choice of bent grass on the greens - Las Brisas was one of the first courses in Europe to do so.
Las Brisas is a very beautiful course that is always well maintained. Many of the greens are raised and protected by well-positioned bunkers. Water comes into play on many of the holes; in total the course has ten artificial lakes, fed by a couple of streams.
When every hole at Las Brisas is exceptional it is difficult to pick one out. The longest on the course is the 5th, a par 5, although this hole shouldn’t present too many difficulties. The 7th, a par 3, is an interesting experience to play with its green spread over two levels.
To be successful at Las Brisas you need to have a precise game. This is a course that rewards accuracy rather power, position as opposed to length. Above all Las Brisas is a course for the thinking golfer.
Las Brisas requires a maximum handicap of 24 for men and 32 for women. It is a soft spikes only course.
Facilities
Las Brisas has a good range of facilities including the usual clubhouse, restaurant and bar. There is also a putting green, driving range and Pro Shop. The Golf Hotel was added in 1970.
