La Reserva is a recent addition to the Sotogrande golf scene, having opened in autumn 2003. This area is home to some prestigious courses, such as San Roque, Sotogrande and the former Ryder Cup venue, Valderrama, making this part of the Costa del Sol an excellent base for the discerning golfer. The course is situated within two valleys, which merge together to form a Y-shape. There are some lovely views of the surrounding hillsides and the Mediterranean. During La Reserva’s construction, many trees were temporarily transferred to a nursery before being replanted back in their original place. This has helped to give the course a mature feel, despite its youthfulness. A computerised, state-of-the-art irrigation system ensures that everything is maintained in good condition. The course was designed by Cabell Robinson and has been built to USGA standards.
La Reserva is relatively long, with wide and undulating fairways, while the greens are large and often sloping. Long putts are a feature of this course. Water comes into play on six holes, although they should not present too much of a problem. It is hoped the La Reserva course will come to be regarded as one of the top courses on the Costa del Sol, and a venue for major tournaments. However, with several forwards tees, it should be suitable for all players.
Noteworthy holes on the front nine include the 6th, with water on the left-hand side of the green, and the 8th, which slopes downwards to a putting surface guarded by water on the left and bunkers to the front and rear. The 14th on the back nine has just one bunker, situated on the right of the green, and there are some magnificent views from the 15th hole. There is an elevated tee overlooking the tricky green on the short 16th hole.
Facilities
La Reserva has a large clubhouse which houses a restaurant, bar and the changing facilities. There is also a driving range, practice area, golf school, putting green, gym and sauna on the site.
How to get to La Reserva
From the Marbella direction, take the Guadiaro exit (km 135) from the N340 coast road; from the Algeciras direction, exit this road at km133.
