Hotel Molino del PuenteHaving lived and worked on the Costa del Sol for 13 years, it is always exciting to find somewhere new to visit – especially if it is slightly off the beaten track.

Just over an hour from San Pedro on the Ronda-Seville road, is the fabulous Hotel Molino del Puente. Situated only ten minutes from Ronda, this is the perfect stopover for visitors to the famous and historic Spanish town.

Boasting fantastic food and ten attractive bedrooms, this hotel was originally an old Olive Mill and was completely renovated by the current owners, Ian and Elaine, who previously ran the very successful Harbour Lights Restaurant on the coast in Cabopino. Open to non-residents, the restaurant has a super rustic feel to it – with original features such as olive presses and beamed ceilings still in evidence.

My partner and I, along with two friends, visited the hotel for Sunday lunch and could not be more impressed. Set in acres of open countryside, and featuring a swimming pool and large terrace for outside dining, the location is unbeatable.

Hotel Molino del PuenteThe innovative menu featured fresh local produce and home made desserts plus an impressive wine list. We decided to mix and match a few starters and plumped for the goat´s cheese and fresh fig salad with balsamic dressing, the fresh mussels mariniere and red peppers stuffed with cherry tomatoes and anchovies. Everything was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. For main course we tried the rack of lamb with mint and rosemary crust, the fresh salmon topped with rosti potatoes and leek sauce and the roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, horseradish sauce and fresh vegetables.

And believe it or not we still had some room for desserts – choosing the incredible home made banoffee pie with fresh cream and the pears poached in red wine with chocolate sauce – mouthwatering!!

This was undoubtedly the best meal we have had in months, and complemented by such beautiful surroundings. The owners are friendly and informative – telling us all about the local area and its history, and even offering us a tour of the local vineyards when we return. Although we were not staying the night, Ian and Elaine were more than happy to show us the rooms – all beautifully furnished – some with terraces and spa baths included.

All in all this was a great day out – the hotel, surroundings and décor only being surpassed by the sublime food on offer!
