Guadalmina has two 18-hole courses set within a large residential complex; the South Course, which is considered the tougher of the two, and the pleasant North Course. In recent years Guadalmina has been host to the PGA European qualifying tour.
The South Course of mixed parkland is notable for its wide, tree-lined fairways, and follows the route of the Guadalmina river which flows down towards the Mediterranean and comes into play on many of the holes. The course was designed by Javier Arana, who was responsible for several of the older courses on the Costa del Sol. When the it opened in 1959, the South Course had just 9 holes, but was extended a few years later. It hosted its first Pro-am tournament in 1965.
In 2002 the South Course underwent a massive overhaul in which the fairways were re-turfed and the tees and greens updated. Notable holes on the course include the 10th, with its lovely green right next to the beach, and the par 3 11th, with a bunker running all the way along the left-hand side. The par 3 15th is another tricky hole, in which you have to direct the ball between two rows of large trees.
The North Course, designed by Falco Nardi Batini, is quite tight with very fast greens. It has more trees and water hazards than the South Course and is also more undulating. There are several very narrow holes, in particular the 7th and 16th. At the centre of the course is a large and spectacular lake that comes into play on the 9th and 18th holes. One of the trickier holes is the 5th which has a large dogleg to the left. Generally though, the course is not too demanding and it should be suitable for high handicappers.
Both courses are soft spikes only and there is also a minimum handicap of 27 for men and 35 for ladies.
