Perched high above the city of Malaga is the magnificent Gibralfaro Castle, which was once the main defensive focal point of the city during the times of Moorish occupation.
This impressive 14th century fortress maintains much of its original structure, and gives visitors an insight into the Arab lifestyle in Andalucia, and boasts stunning views of the harbour below.
The name Gibralfaro originates from the Arabic word for mountain, yabal, and the Greek word for lighthouse, Faruh, which leads historians to believe that a lighthouse was built on the mountain before the castle existed.
Built during the reign of King Yusuf I, in order to protect the royal palaces of Alcazaba, the castle still displays the military equipment which was introduced by the Arabs to Al-Andalus.
Furnaces, wells and fountains remain intact, and the Arab mosque within the walls was converted into a Christian church during the reconquest. A fusion of Arabic and European styles features heavily throughout the monument, which constitutes a unique feature of Andalucian architecture.
