There are hundreds of fabulous places to eat in Puerto Banus, but the Mumtaz Indian Restaurants is still one of the most popular in the port.

Established for 20 years in Puerto Banus, the Mumtaz attracts diners from all over Andalucia, and offers some of the most innovative Indian cuisine to be found in Spain. Combining some of the freshest ingredients available with unique experience and tradition, Mumtaz is a superb place to eat.
Indian food has continued to grow in popularity in the Western world ever since the first Indian restaurants opened in the UK in the 1970´s. Once known as curry houses, Indian restaurants now serve some of the most exquisite food in the world, and the range of dishes has evolved over the past few decades to include some sumptuous dishes.

There are many good Indian restaurants on the Costa del Sol, but with a sophisticated atmosphere, excellent service and an unbeatable location, the Mumtaz wipes the floor with the competition. This is fine dining at its best.

The Mumtaz specialises in Moghul cuisine, and focuses on dishes cooked in the traditional tandoor oven, in a typically north-west Indian style. In addition to all the old favourites, such as the ever-popular chicken tikka masala and lamb korma, the skilled chefs at the Mumtaz also change the menu regularly, adding more modern and innovative dishes to suit even the most discerning diner.
The extensive wine list complements the menu beautifully, and you will find some of Spain´s finest wines at reasonable prices. A wide range of vegetarian dishes are also offered, and some of the tastiest vegetables are served in a variety of ways to tempt the tastebuds.

When we visit the Mumtaz, we normally take a stroll around the marina first, stopping off for cocktails or a glass or two of wine in Sinatra´s Bar or the Salduba Pub at the entry to the port. There is nothing quite like relaxing in Puerto Banus during the summer time with a few drinks before dinner, whilst watching the world go by.

After being greeted warmly by the maitre de, we were shown to our table overlooking the boats in the marina, and offered aperitifs and a range of non-alcoholic cocktails for the children.
Last time we visited there were 8 of us including 4 children, and everyone was looked after superbly by the attentive staff. There are plenty of dishes on the menu which are great for kids, and most of them can be ordered with less spice and garlic if required.

We like to order a range of starters when out with a party, and plumped for 5 different starters which included:- a mixed grill with sheikh kebab, chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, chicken wings and lamb tikka, a marinated prawns with spices served with fried bread, murg tandoori, which is a house speciality of marinated chicken barbecued over charcoal in a clay oven, channa chapat, which is chickpeas cooked with spices and potato purée, and tandoori fish, which is marinated in mild spices and cooked in the tandoor oven.

For main course we decided to order half vegetarian and half meat so everyone was happy. Some of our favourite dishes include:- benjan bhaji, aubergines cooked with spices and herbs, dal tarka, lentils cooked with spices and onions, bombay alu, potatoes sautéed in butter with lemon and herbs, mushroom bhaji, mushrooms cooked with green peas and spices, and vegetable nepal, which is a delicious selection of vegetables, cooked with cream, almonds, raisins and mixed fruits.

We also love the Mumtaz speciality main course of biryani mughlai, which is lamb or chicken cooked with rice and served with a spicy sauce separate. For the braver diners who like it hot, the murg vindalu is superb, and consists of hot and spicy chicken with new potatoes, cooked in curry sauce. The kids always order the bhuna chicken, which is diced pieces of meat with fresh herbs and a thick, tasty sauce. The sag gosht is also a winner with our family, and includes tender lamb and spinach cooked in a light sauce.
The range of rices and speciality breads are fantastic, and include all the usual favourites such as pilau rice and peshwari naan, plus a delicious mushroom rice and tandoor paratha, which is extra light unleavened bread, buttered and baked in a clay oven.

Many Indian restaurants are let down by their choice of desserts, but this is not the case at the Mumtaz. Ice creams, kulfi and tropical fruits are offered as well as special Indian tea to help you digest the delicious food.

If you are visiting the Mumtaz during the summer months, booking is highly recommended.
