Located on the crest of the Sierra del Hacho, 626 metres above sea level and commanding some spectacular views of Gibraltar and the Rif mountains of North Africa, is the beautiful mountain village of Gaucin., The area has some of the most stunning countryside with red poppies, yellow mimosa and wild orchids.covering the backdrop of the mountains. Its name comes from Arab word, “guazan” (strong rock).
The village has a small population of 2000 but it has a rich history, and was once an important Roman settlement.
The centre of this charming little village is made up of narrow, twisting streets and these made it a popular haven for the brandy and tobacco smugglers, who used to traveling though the surrounding hills.
Until recently the houses in this quant little village had no running water and one light bulb although now after much renovation work , the homes in the village are awash with all the latest mod cons
The main feature of this village is the Castillo del Aguila (Eagle’s Castle), its stunning castle which dates from the roman times. During the Arab rule they expanded the castle into a fortress. For bird lovers this is one of the best places in Spain, you can see eagles circling the towers and kestrels can be found nesting in the walls of the medieval convent.
Visitors can enter the castle from 11 am to 2 pm and from 5 pm to 7 pm and it is the venue for an occasional concerts. If you like Foot stomping flamenco then the convent which dates from the 1700’s is the place to head for the convent and you can enjoy classical recitals in the church. of San Sebastian which dates from 1487.. The Bell tower of the church dominates the town and if you are lucky you will here the church choir singing,
The village is home to many artists and for those of you who wish to learn many art courses are offered locally. Details of some of the local artists and those who offer lessons can be found on the very informative village website.
The more active visitor can find some exceptional guided walks, nature trails and bird watching excursions as well as two riding stables located just outside the village while lovers of mountain biking can find a centre that offers weekend excursions, again details of which can be found on the village website.
