Refugio de JuanarEl Refugio de Juanar enjoys an idyllic location among pine forests, mountains and some of the most beautiful countryside in Andalucia.
For centuries, man and nature have lived in harmony in the mountains of Ojén, and El Refugio de Juanar, 3,000 feet above sea level, was built on the site of an old aristocratic hunting lodge, and enables visitors to enjoy a peaceful stay in a natural environment. France´s Charles de Gaulle stayed here in 1970, to finish his memoirs.

Hikers, trekkers and nature lovers are among the hotel´s many regular visitors, and the woodland trails and walks are mapped out on the website and on leaflets in reception. Ranging in difficulty, one of the best walks for beginners is from the hotel to the Mirador de Marbella (approx. 2km), which boasts stunning views down to the coast. For visitors who prefer to take it easy, there is a swimming pool in the grounds, and a tennis court for the more energetic.

The perfect place for a short break or a day out with the family, this modern, yet traditional hotel is located only twenty minutes from Marbella, and boasts 18 double rooms, an apartment to sleep six and two private suites. If you are only spending a day here, non-residents are also welcome to use the restaurant and bar facilities at the hotel.

Keeping with a local theme, the restaurants prides itself on a fantastic selection of game dishes, inspired by the surrounding landscape, including partiridge, rabbit, venison, pheasant and quail. Although meat is a speciality here, there are plenty of other dishes to choose from for the fish and vegetable lovers, and meals can be taken in the comfortable restaurant or outside on the terrace.
The grounds of the hotel are set amongst pine trees, creating a natural garden with patio, barbecue area and a pool bar, serving cold drinks and cocktails to the sun worshippers.

If you are interested in wine, ask the waiter if you can see the bodega, situated below the main dining room. Designed by the director of El Refugio, José Gomez Avila, in 1997, this incredible wine cellar holds over 7,000 bottles of red wine, Iberian Ham and the finest Manchego cheese you are ever likely to eat.
