Mijas Golf is one of the most popular golf complexes on the coast with two contrasting 18-hole courses, Los Lagos and Los Olivos, both of which have been designed by Robert Trent Jones.
Los Lagos
Los Lagos, which opened in 1976, is the older of the two courses and is characterised by its wide fairways and large greens. It is also one of the flattest courses in the area. Los Lagos takes its name from the eight lakes which are a major hazard on many of the holes. There are several sand traps to contend with as well. The course does feel very open though, due to the scarcity of rough and lack of trees, so it tends to favour the bigger hitter. Los Lagos is one of the busiest courses on the coast and is particularly popular with holiday golfers.
Los Olivos
Los Olivos is very different to Los Lagos, with much tighter fairways, smaller greens and far fewer water hazards. The course is also more undulating and is considered to be the most challenging of the two. It takes its name from the many olive trees which surround the fairways. Since Los Olivos opened in 1984, the course has undergone a complete overhaul, with new bunkers and tees. This refurbishment has resulted in making Los Olivos a much more attractive course. Notable holes include the difficult 2nd (par 3) on which you can utilise the bank to the rear of the green, and the seventh, which has a slight dogleg and a lake on the left of the two-tiered green. The final hole is also quite tricky due to the fairway which runs quickly towards the trees on the left-hand side.
Both courses at Mijas Golf have a maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies, and are soft spikes only.
How to get to Mijas Golf
The golf complex is located in the Mijas valley, close to Fuengirola and within easy reach of Marbella. Take the Las Lagunas exit from the N340 as it bypasses Fuengirola (next to the water park), and follow the signs for Coin. The club is then about 3km from the N340.
Facilities
Mijas Golf is notable for its clubhouse, which has been converted from a former cortijo (farmhouse). There is also a restaurant and driving range.
