The Villa Nueva Golf Resort is a recent addition to the Costa de la Luz golf scene, having opened in March 2006. It is situated next to the town of Puerto Real, about 10 minutes from Cadiz and just a couple of kilometres from the sea. The beautifully-designed course has large greens seeded with Agrostis Stolfinera 293 grass, while the fairways are sown with Bermuda grass. With nearly 100 bunkers and five lakes, Villa Nueva provides a challenge for golfers of all abilities.
The course starts off with a couple of par 4’s of average length. The second of these is the most challenging with plenty of bunkers to contend with. Hole 3 (par 5) also has numerous bunkers, while water comes into play on the par-3 fourth hole. The 7th is the longest par-3 on the course, although thankfully there are not too many hazards and the green is very wide. This is followed by Villa Nueva’s longest par 4, which again has another large green.
The back-nine begins with a fairly unremarkable par-4 of average length, in contrast to the 10th (par 5), which is one of the most interesting holes on the course. This has a stream on the right of the fairway and more water protecting the rear of the green. Yet another of Villa Nueva’s large greens is a feature of the 11th (par 3), while some fiendishly-positioned bunkers create a problem on the 12th (par 4), which also has a sharp dogleg to the left. The par-5 14th is one of the most demanding and spectacular holes, with a huge lake on the right and a stream crossing the fairway. In contrast the next hole is a short and relatively easy par-3, although the undulating green can be troublesome. The final three holes are all quite tricky, particularly the 16th (par 4) which has a fairway bordered by trees and shrubs, and a green well-protected by bunkers. A large lake is the main feature of the 17th (par 3) while the final hole features a 90-degree dogleg.
Facilities
Villa Nueva has a clubhouse, restaurant, pro shop, driving range with 50 bays, pitching green, putting green, and a golf academy. A 5-star hotel is to be built at the entrance to the course.
