Sanlucar Club de Campo is an interesting course which combines both links and American parkland styles. It is situated close to Sanlucar de Barrameda, a famous old sherry town from which explorer Fernando Magellen set off on his round-the-world voyage. Opposite the course, on the other side of the River Guadalquivir, is the Donana National Park, a protected wetland area which is home to several rare species such as the Iberian Lynx and Spanish Imperial Eagle. Former Spanish Amateur champion, Borja Quiepo de Llano, has designed the Sanlucar course to blend in with the natural environment. With this aim in mind, around 3000 trees have been planted throughout this country estate. The course also boasts an environmentally-friendly irrigation system, in which rainwater is stored in large pools.
The front nine, despite not being situated next to the coast, feels very much like a traditional British links course, with small but deep bunkers and numerous little hillocks. In contrast the back nine is American in style. On this part of the course you will come across many water hazards – there are seven in total – along with multi-platform greens and a few doglegs.
Because Sanlucar occupies such a large expanse of land, there is plenty of space available and the low-level development in the area does not encroach upon the course. The designer has utilised this space to create long and wide fairways, although they are often affected by strong sea breezes blowing in off the Atlantic. Sanlucar is notable for the high quality of its greens, while the Spanish Golf Federation has rated the course as one of the most challenging in Spain for players of all levels.
How to get to Sanlucar Golf
The course is situated about 15 miles (24km) to the north-west of Jerez. Take the a-480 towards Sanlucar and just short of the town, take the A471 twoards Seville. Exit this road at km58.5 and follow signs to the golf.
Facilities
Sanlucar has a new clubhouse with dressing rooms, bar, restuarant and shop. Practice facilities include driving range, putting green, and pitching green. The club has a golf school, opened in 2004, which offers the Golf Handicap Certificate Course issued by the Spanish Golf Federation. Individual and group lessons, plus courses for children, are also available.
