El Puerto is an attractive golf course situated in one corner of the ‘Sherry Triangle’ in the province of Cadiz. Close by is the historic town of El Puerto de Santa Maria where the explorer Christopher Columbus lived between 1483 and 1486, prior to his maiden voyage to the New World in 1492. His flagship for that journey, the Santa Maria, was also fitted out in the town.
Golf El Puerto was designed by former Ryder Cup player Manuel Pinero and it opened in 2001. The course has hosted the Copa de Andalucia and is also the headquarters of the Andalucian Tour. It is hoped that El Puerto will become a venue for professional tournaments in the future.
The course itself blends in beautifully with its natural surroundings. There is a variety of holes on which you can expect to play a range of different shots. El Puerto provides a good test for all abilities, with plenty of hazards including doglegs, trees, bunkers and streams. In particular there are some large expanses of water which come into play on several of the holes. The course is gently undulating so it fairly easy to walk, although it is very long. It is also quite open with few blind spots.
The first couple of holes are par-4’s, the second of which has a 90-degree dogleg to the left and a large lake that you have to clear. One of El Puerto’s most challenging holes is the 17th, an uphill par-4 on which the green is surrounded by bunkers. The final hole is a long par 5 with a lake running along the left-hand side of the fairway.
Facilities
El Puerto has a modern clubhouse which is situated on the highest part of the course. This has all the usual facilities you would expect including changing rooms, showers, pro shop, and a restaurant that specialises in seafood. In addition, there is a driving range, chipping green, putting green and several practice bunkers. Golf lessons are also available.
How to get to El Puerto Golf
The course is situated just outside the town of El Puerto de Santa Maria, close to the N-IV highway. It is within easy reach of Jerez International Airport.
