Situated next to the Jerez Grand Prix race track is Montecastillo Golf, widely regarded as the finest course in the province of Cadiz. It has also been ranked as the 53rd best golf course in the world by the respected Golf World magazine. Montecastillo has hosted several prestigious tournaments, including the Turespaña Masters Open in 1994 and 1996. For five consecutive years it was also the venue for the Volvo Masters, before the competition reverted back to another top course in Andalucia, Valderrama, in 2002. Montecastillo was designed by the legendary American golfer, Jack Nicklaus, and it opened in 1992. The resort was bought by the Barcelo Group in 2005 and they are investing millions of euros to improve the already excellent facilities.
This is a challenging course, although with up to five tee positions on each hole, it is also possible for high handicappers to enjoy their round. The fairways are wide and appear very inviting. However, there are some cleverly-positioned bunkers so you need to exercise caution. The greens are very large and fast, while some of the tees are elevated. Water hazards affect half a dozen of the holes. As this is a long course, buggies are recommended. The first few holes are especially long, but as you continue around the course, water comes into play several times and accuracy becomes more important. Montecastillo’s final holes are very challenging with some steep slopes, particularly on the 18th (par 4), on which the tee is perched on top of a hill with the green about 40 metres below, protected by a problematic lake.
The Montecastillo course is tidy and well-maintained, while the multilingual staff are helpful and friendly. Compared to another top Spanish course, Valderrama, the green fees are reasonably priced. There is a maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies.
Facilities
Montecastillo’s clubhouse and pro shop are housed within an imposing castle. Other facilities include a putting green, driving range with 75 bays, pitching green, short game practice area, private golf academy, and a terrace bar overlooking a lake. There is also the 5-star Montecastillo Hotel which offers a range of leisure amenities.
How to get to Montecastillo
Montecastillo is situated just off the main Jerez de la Frontera to Arcos road, about 10km (6 miles) from Jerez and 14km (9 miles) from the airport.
