Almerimar GolfJust a short distance from the coast is this beautiful golf course which boasts an abundance of trees and shrubs. With all this lush vegetation, Almerimar feels very much like an oasis within the dry mountainous landscape of Almeria province. The course was designed by Gary Player with in association with Ron Kirby. The original 18 holes were opened in 1976, and a further nine holes have been added in the last couple of years.

A major renovation project at Almerimar has just been completed. This has resulted in a number of improvements including updated practice facilities, a new irrigation system, new and improved bunkers, and a new lake on the first hole. The greens have also been replaced, and the fairways and tees restructured. When Almerimar opened in the 1970’s it was considered quite a long course. However, due to technological advances, it now plays considerably shorter. Therefore, as part of the improvements, the course has also been lengthened wherever possible.

Almerimar is flat, and can generally be described as American in style, while the recently opened nine holes are close to the beach and therefore feel more like a links course. The fairways on the original 18 holes are wide and tree-lined. These mature trees create an excellent natural hazard, as well as providing some much-needed shade during the hot summer months. Several of the tees are elevated while the large greens are often protected by good-sized bunkers. There are also some huge lakes which come into play on some of the holes.

The 12th (par 3) is probably the most challenging on the Almerimar course. This has an island green in the centre of a lake - possibly the first of its kind in Europe. To find the green you must play your tee-shot over a 100-metre stretch of water.

Facilities
Almerimar’s clubhouse is housed within the 4-star Golf Hotel Almerimar, situated between the 1st and 10th tees. Practice facilities include a pitching green, driving range and putting green. The course’s golf school offers lessons for children, beginners and improvers.
