Calanova Golf is the latest course on the Costa del Sol. It has been designed by Julian Garcia-Mayoral from Aymerich Golf Management, the company responsible for running several courses throughout France and Spain. Calanova is characterised by the superb views of the mountains and sea from nearly every hole. Also, because the tees are spread across several platforms and the pin positions can be varied quite considerably, it is possible to set up the course with huge differences in its length.
There is quite an easy start to the course at the first hole (par 5) which has an elevated tee and a dogleg fairway. There is another dogleg at the 2nd hole (par 4) and you will need to hit your second shot uphill. It’s all downhill though at the third (par 4), which features a ravine about 90 metres from the green. This is followed by the tricky 4th (par 4), with an extreme 90 degree dogleg to the right and a small green. Another dogleg, this time to the left, is a feature of the 5th (par 4), while the 6th hole is the first of Calanova’s par 3’s. This hole has an elevated tee and a water hazard to the right and left of the green. The 7th hole (par 4) is fairly straightforward, but with a tricky two-tiered green to contend with.
Other interesting holes include the 10th (par 5) which is played downhill from another elevated tee towards a well-protected green, and the 14th, a very long par 5 which has a dogleg and a small and narrow green. In contrast the 15th (par 4) is short yet challenging. Here you must hit your tee-shot over a ravine onto a rather narrow fairway. It’s downhill again at the 16th (par 4) which has some well-positioned bunkers.
Calanova Golf has a maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies. It is a soft spikes only course.
