cabo-de-trafalgart.jpgDuring the summer this is a very busy place, but in winter its a perfect place to relax and enjoy the endless beaches. Cabo de Trafalgar is situated on the Atlantic site of the Cdiz Province, halfway Tarifa and Cdiz, near Vejer de la Frontera. There are two ways to get there, either via the eastside, the town of Barbate, or via the northwest side, through Conil de la Frontera or Vejer de la Frontera.

Coming from Barbate, the road leads you through an umbrella pine forest. This forms part of the Parque Natural La Brea y Marisma de Barbate, a beautiful natural park. Next you pass through Los Caos de Meca, a small village that during the summer is occupied by alternative people and surfers. But in winter you hardly see anybody. West of Los Caos, a road leads to a cape with on top of it a lighthouse; the Cabo de Trafalgar. The lighthouse itself is not open for visitors, but it is possible to climb the hill and walk around it.

On top of the cape, next to the lighthouse, you can read some information about the Battle of Trafalgar which took place in October 1805 and was one of the most important battles during the Napoleonic war. In this battle, a British fleet led by Horatio Nelson, destroyed the French/Spanish fleet led by Piere De Villeneuve.

At the far end of the cape you have a magnificent view. Kilometers of beautiful beaches stretch on both sides of the Cabo de Trafalgar. In winter you can walk from the lighthouse to the northwest for a long time without meeting anybody. In summer, when it gets really busy, this is different of course. The eastside of the cape, called the Playas de los Caos de Meca, is very popular among kite surfers. On windy days, especially in summer, the air above the sea is fully colored by kites.

Cabo de TrafalgarIf you are bored of the endless beaches, which is hard to imagine, there are lots of other things to do and see around. For a drink or some tapas you can go to the Paseo Martimo in Barbate, an old fishing town. Or, maybe more interesting, to Vejer de la Frontera, an old white town on top of a hill. A visit to the earlier mentioned Parque Natural La Brea y Mirisma de Barbate is also worthwhile. You can walk through the forest to the old 16th century lookout tower Torre del Tajo, or to the 18th century Torre de Meca.
