There are many charming villages in Andalucia and one these is located in the northern part of the Axarquía region of Malaga province. It is the charming village of Canillas de Aceituno,

The village is just 51kilometres away from Málaga City, sitting on the hillside of the Sierra Tejeda.

Its narrow, winding streets climbing up the steep slope are lined with whitewashed houses all decked out in flowers which give visitors a real feel of traditional Spain

The village’s name derives from the Latin word “cannillae” (reed bed) and the Arab term “azeytuni,” which refers to silk manufacturing for which the village became famous during the Moorish times

The village has some wonderful buildings and monuments including the , Casa de los Diezmos (Tithe House), also known as the Casa de la Reina Mora (House of the Moorish Queen) which is built in the Mudejar style. The production and sale of mulberry leaves and silkworms in the entire region used to be controlled in this building.

The Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Built in the Gothic-Mudejar style in the 16th Century , sits on the highest point in town. It is well worth taking a walk up to the church as it gives you an excellent vantage point to look at the whole village;

Canillas de Aceituno is an ideal place to go hiking or for lovers of nature with attractions like The La Fájara, Los Tajos Lisos, La Rábita and Las Rahije well worth the visit

For the experienced hiker the trail to the peak of La Maroma provides a challenge to be undertaken. The trial is classed as Very difficult and must only be undertaken by those with extensive experience The trail is open all year and every possible precaution must be taken in winter, when snow covers the crests of the mountain range.

The village celebrates a number of festivals during the year including the carnivals in February and the Día de la Morcilla (Day of the Morcilla) which is held on the last Sunday in April . Visitors to the village on this day are treated to the excellent morcilla (a type of sausage) that is produced in the area.
