Located in the centre of the beautiful Andalucian province Cádiz you find the charming white village of Alcalá de los Gazules

The village is located just 23 kilometers east of the village of Medina Sidonia and is often passed by as people head along the A381 road from Los Barrios to Jerez. . The lack of visitors has meant that the village has remained largely unchanged over the last few years.

In 1984 in recognition of the village’s examples of baroque and neoclassic architecture along with the traditional Andaluz houses that can be found in the old town centre Alcalá was granted the honor of official “Historic-Artistic” status .

The centre of the village is a great example of the traditional white washed villages that adorn the stunning landscape of Andalucia. If you are looking for the “Real Spain” then this village is well worth a visit . There are only a handful of bars and restaurants and there are very few British menus on offer. The streets are uneven, and are linked by beautiful plazas.

There are not many buildings or monuments of any note although there are some historic monuments worth visiting in the town such as the Churches of San Jorge and San Francisco and the Santa Domingo Convent along with the Sanctuary of the Virgen de los Santos (5 kilometers outside of Alcalá) and the Fuente de la Salada - of Roman origin built to allow the flow of a natural source of spring water and the village does sit on the famous ‘Ruta del Toro‘ and is at the heart of the Parque Natural de los Alcornocales

The landscape surrounding the village is a nature-lovers paradise covered with the ‘alcornocales’ (cork trees) which give the name to the national park that surrounds the village . In the town the local shops sell traditional artisan products while the nature lovers can enjoy clean air and country walks.

Local Fiestas in Alcalá de los Gazules

Carnival the first week of March

St. George’s Day on the 23rd April” San Jorge” is the patron saint of the town.

The town celebrates its fair the last week in August.

On the 12th September is the Romería (Pilgrimage) of Nuestra Señora de los Santos. This fiesta dates back to the 15th century and is the most popular one of its kind in the province of Cadiz.
