Antequera is one of the most attractive courses in inland Andalucia. It is also the first 18-hole golf course to have been constructed in the north of Malaga province. With the opening in December 2007 of the new high-speed rail link, the town of Antequera will be just a couple of hours from Madrid and about 20 minutes from Malaga. The course is accessible from most of Andalucia, with the cities of Seville, Granada and Cordoba all within about an hour’s drive.
Antequera Golf is about 650 metres above sea level. The course is overlooked by the mountains of El Torcal, which are famous for their unusual rock formations. The fairways are mostly lined with olive trees, some of which are over two hundred years old. These trees help to blend the course in with its natural surroundings. There are also ten lakes which come into play on several holes. These have the added bonus of collecting water during the winter months which is then used to irrigate the course. Antequera is quite a demanding venue, although players are presented with a choice of shots at every hole. Sensible course management is advisable if you want to finish with a low score.
Notable holes include the 6th (par 3) which is guarded by a lake and no fewer than four bunkers. There are some great views from this hole. The 14th is a long par 5 which has a subtle left dogleg, with out of bounds on the right and water on the left-hand side. Watch out for the green which slopes away from you.
Antequera Golf was opened in 2003 and designed by Jose Mara Canizares. This is quite a hilly course so buggy hire is recommended.
Facilities
Antequera Golf has a clubhouse, bar, restaurant, pro shop, par-3 practice course, driving range and putting green. In addition the nearby golf hotel has some excellent leisure amenities including swimming pool, sauna, fitness centre, Jacuzzi and Turkish bath.
How to get to Antequera Golf
If travelling from the Malaga direction, follow the A45 on to the A92 towards Seville. Ignore the N331A exit for Antequera but continue along the A92 until you reach the junction with the A343. Take this road following the signs to the Antequera Golf Hotel. The course is about 2km beyond the hotel.
