Located at the entrance to the stunning Guadalhorce valley the town of Alhaurin de la Torre has much to offer visitors.The twon is located just 17kmfrom Malga and a short drive from the Airport this Andalucian town is fast becomming a popular base for visitors to the Western Costa Del Sol. It is within easy reach of the beaches at Torremolinos and Malaga as well as been close to stunning Guadalhorce valley and the Mijas Mountains
The town has an charming feel to it with a beautiful blend of the old and new with its old Moorish-style streets and houses in the Barrio Viejo and the new modern estates on the outskirts of the town.
Visitors to the town can see some important and interesting archaeological remains from the Roman period such as ceramic fragments, bowls, wall drawings, coins and burial objects : The main areas of interest are the Cortijo de Mollina, where the remains of a Moorish farm-house and tower still stand and remains in the El Cardón Valley Carrera de Caballos areas and the area around the Casa de Torrijos, in Torrealquería.
There are also some beautiful buildings in the town such as the Church of San Sebastián which was built in 1505 at the request of Queen Isabel . and the Casa Refugio de Torrijos where in 1831 General José María Torrijos and his forces took refuge after the General led a rising against the absolute monarchy of Fernando VII in an attempt to restore the Constitution of 1812. They failed and after capture were shot on the beaches of Carmen in Malaga.
Another Interesting place of interest in the town are the remains of the aqueduct known as the Acueducto de la Fuente del Rey which was built in the 18th Century to carry water from the stream of the same name in Churriana to Malaga city Howeverit was never used due the pressure from local land owners and the economic problems of the time.
Also in the town in Los Callejones you will find the Hermitage of Santo Cristo del Cardón where in 1484 it is said that a Christian soldier was from death at the hands of the Moors by the image of Christ painted on wood.
Apart from these historic monuments Alhaurin de la Torre is also becomming popular with golfers as it is located just six km from Lauro Golf which is one of the Costa Del Sols best courses and also not far from the stunning course aof Alhaurin Golf in the nearby Town of Alhaurin El Grande There is a tennis club “La Capellanía” which organises an annual tournament in the month of September, called the Capellanía Open.and on the outskirts of the town n the Jarapalo mountains there is the Real Sociedad de Tiro de Pichón (the Royal Society of Clay Pigeon Shooting).
It has also become famous over the last few years due to its Prison where many of the Marbella Town Hall scandels are now being held
There are many bars restuarants and hotels in the town and the outskirts and the town has good transport links with regular buses to and from Malaga and Churianna
There are also many festivals held thoughout the year which along with everything else makes Alhaurin de La Torre a great place to visit or even stay during your trip to Andalucia
January 5th The well-known Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos (Procession of the Three Kings) takes place
January 20th The town hosts a festival in honour of San Sebastián where the celbrations last for three days with a host of cultural and folkloric activities taking place
Febuary 2nd The town takes part in The Day of the Purification of the Most Holy Virgin - El Día de la Purificación de la Santísima Virgen where the people of the make offerings of traditionally made doughnuts decorated in coloured ribbons to the Virgin, and at night-fall, the burning of the dolls takes place in a huge bonfire in the central square
Feb/March The town enjoys its carnival and at the end there is a national competition of percussion bands
May/June The town decorates the houses and streets with flowers to celebrate the Festival of Corpus Christi
June The town celebrates the Flamenco Festival, the “Torre del Cante, one of the most prestigious flamenco festivals in all of Andalucía followed by The Fiestas Mayores de San Juan Bautista, summer patron saint of the municipality
