Alcaidesa GolfA short distance up the coast from Gibraltar is Alcaidesa, the only true links course in Andalucia. It is one of the most picturesque golf courses along the Costa del Sol, with superb views of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean, and the Atlas mountains of Africa in the distance. The majority of the holes are alongside the beach although part of the course is situated higher up in the hills. On this section vigorous sea breezes can severely affect shots. Most of the fairways are wide and open, although they can be deceptive, with wayward shots likely to end up in the thick gorse. Straight and accurate hitters will thrive at Alcaidesa. Water hazards also come into play on several of the holes, although the greens are not particularly difficult. One of the top holes on the course is the 2nd (par 3) which is all downhill with numerous water hazards and bunkers.

The original course, which opened in 1992, was designed by Clive Clark and Peter Alliss who were inspired by some of the famous courses in Scotland such as Turnberry. In 1997, while the Ryder Cup was being played nearby at Valderrama, Alcaidesa hosted the junior version of the event, which was won by the American team. Recent improvements have made the links course more suitable for all levels of ability.

A new 18-hole course, named Alcaidesa Heathland, opened in the autumn of 2007. It was designed by David Thomas and features wide fairways with yet more outstanding views along the coastline. Many of the holes on this course incorporate water hazards.

There is a maximum handicap at Alcaidesa of 28 for men and 36 for ladies. These are soft spikes only courses.

How to get to Alcaidesa
Exit the A7-E15 at the km124 turnoff between Sotogrande and San Roque. The course is situated next to the coast about 3km south of the main road.

Facilities
A new clubhouse has recently been opened at Alcaidesa. The building, which covers an area of more than 3,000 square metres, contains a restaurant, from which there are great views over the course and the Mediterranean beyond, a children’s play centre, meeting rooms, large pro shop and new changing rooms. Alcaidesa also has a golf school for children, driving range, plus putting and chipping greens.
