When visiting Ronda or Seville you should add the Ancient city of Acinipo to your to-do list.
The ruins of this historic 32 hectare city are located 1000m above sea level approx 22km in the direction of Seville from the historic town of Ronda
The first thing you see as you arrive at the city is a very impressive Stone entrance which leads into a muddy farmyard, Dont allow this less impresive site put you off though.
You should head up the hill towards a large monument passing piles of stone which mark the location of houses.
The ciry dates from the first century AD when it had a population of approx 5000 and even minted its own currency which had grapes on it..
There is also evidence of a Bronze age settlement here dating from around 1,100 and 750 BC. Near the car park you can can see the foundations of circular huts with the floor paving still in place. In one area a sign identifies the forum. Some large foundation stones and troughs can be seen. In this area excavations have found numerous buildings with emblems. This has lead archaeologists to believe that they must have belonged to public buildings.
As you reach the top of the escarpment behind the large monuument the walk up is rewarded by the sight of the stunning Roman theatre, which is large enough to seat 2,000 people and in very good condition - it even has beautiful orange tiled orchestra pit and actors’ changing rooms. It is suggested the theatre was started in 65 AD and completed about 200 AD. A modern steel stage has been constructed which hosts shows from time to time
