One of the best family days out on the Coast is a visit to Selwo Wildlife Park close to Estepona just 15 minutes west of Marbella.
Boasting over 2,000 semi-free animals, made up of 200 species, this really is a wonderland for children and adults alike. I have to admit, before my first visit I was worried that Selwo might be a glorified zoo, but nothing is further from the truth! The animals are well cared for and all enjoy roaming around in over 100 hectares of open land.
On entering Selwo we first walked through the open parrot complex where some of the most beautiful species were sunning themselves and preening proudly on their perches. After that we passed slowly through the amazing area which is home to hundreds of birds of prey. This awesome aviary is surrounded by vast nets which soar up into the sky – allowing the birds plenty of room to spread their wings. This was a real treat for the younger members of the family who had never seen wild birds so close up.
From there we took our time exploring the many compounds and enjoyed seeing the animals flourish in what can only be described as a natural environment. The rhino enclosure will be remembered particularly as we were lucky enough to be passing at feeding time. This impressive beast was being fed whole carrots and cauliflowers. Obviously not wanting to get too near to that sabre like tusk and those Jurassic Park style teeth, the keeper was tossing the vegetables into its enormous mouth from a safe distance! And who could blame him. Another reason to remember the rhino was, just before leaving, he flicked his lively tail, having just rolled in his own muck, and splattered mud all over my niece´s hair – thankfully she saw the funny side!
There are plenty of refreshment stops and well positioned toilets around the park, and plenty of helpful staff around should you have any questions.
By popular demand we spent far too long at the Meerkats enclosure, and I have to admit, they were fascinating. So inquisitive, standing on their back legs with their front paws dangling in front of them as their heads darted around not wanting to miss a trick!
We then strolled over the bridge, looking down in wonder at the zebras below – this really was beginning to feel like a safari adventure. Just on the other side were the open trucks which go in two directions around the park – from which many of the larger animals can be seen in their natural habitats. We saw fabulous tigers, the most majestic lions and the ambling and awesome brown bears. The giraffes also proved to be surprisingly inquisitive and were a great source of intrigue and amusement to the children.
Thatched safari style huts can also be rented out per night at Selwo – giving families the chance to stay overnight and enjoy the facilities.
After 4 hours of fun and frolics with the animals, we hopped off the truck at the café/bar at the top of the park for some snacks and drinks. The outside terrace here offers the most amazing views over open countryside and down to the coast. We ordered some delicious sandwiches, a couple of beers and drinks for the children, and enjoyed the afternon sunshine, feeling literally on top of the world. And the kids favourite animals? None of the big four for them – the winners by a unanimous decision were the meerkats!!
One thing to remember - Opening times vary so always check with the park before you visit!
