The historical city of Cordoba in Andalucia is famous for many things, one thing being the music and dance shows that take place each year across the city. In July 2008 the city plays host to one of the world’s best guitar festivals.
The festival celebrates its 28th year and again like every year has attracted the best guitar players from around the world.
The festival is split into two programs
1. The Concerts And Performances Program - which sees concerts from the world’s great performers for all to enjoy.
2. Instructional Program – There are numerous courses on all aspects of guitar playing as well as flamenco dance and voice classes
The whole city comes alive with the sounds of guitar playing from the 4th to the 18th of the month with concerts taking place right across the city .It truly does become the “City of the Guitar” during the festival
There are 4 main venues across the city where you will be able to enjoy great music
1 The Gran Teatro:, Cordobas main theatre sees 12 concerts including two symphonic concerts with solist, flamenco and classical guitar, and prestigious international jazz and blues groups, and flamenco groups.
2 The Teatro de la Axerquía (large outdoor amphitheatre) sees a total of eight concerts featuring Rock, Blues, Jazz Fusion, Flamenco, Pop, and Brazilian Music. A diversity of styles for diverse audiences
3 The Baroque Patio of the Diputación (District Council Building) This venue sees a selection of three musical styles in the festival over the course of the years (flamenco, jazz, jazz manouche), These concerts offer a varied sampling of the festival in Spain , with a total of seven performances, one for each group of towns
4 The Teatro Cómico Principal (Comedy Theatre): This venue offers a total of nine concerts with the best classical soloist guitar performers in the world and is one of the most popular venues of the festival especially with the students and young people. This venue will also see the performance of the winner of the Fifth International Cordoba Guitar Festival Competition and an splendid performance of the famous “La Leona” by Antonio de Torres, from Almeria
Other venues across the city include the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos: Cordoba’s castle/fortress, Caballerizas Reales: the royal stables, Palacio de Congresos: Cordoba’s event and conference centre, Plaza de Capuchinos: Capuchinos Square, Plaza de la Corredera: Correderae, Plaza del Potro: Potro Square…
There will be some great performances from guitar players and bands from around the world bringing performances featuring all aspects of guitar music from flamenco guitar to jazz and modern guitar
During the festival the city comes alive with a whole host of activities and it is a great time to visit.
