One thing that makes Andalucia so popular and a wonderful place to visit is its diverse landscape. The coastal regions have some of the best beaches in the world but just a short drive inland you will find some of the most beautiful and magnificent mountain ranges such as the Sierra de Mijas and the world famous Sierra Nevadas.

It is some of these mountains that play the central role in an event which promises to attract many visitors . The town of Benalmádena on the Western Costa del Sol is well known as a premier beach resort with a fantastic nightlife but it is the stunning mountains that provide the backdrop to the town that will be the central attraction on the 5th October when the town hosts the 1st Calamorro Mountain Race, which is classed a qualifying event for the Andalusian Mountain Race Cup 2008. The event is an official event for the Andalusian Mountaineering Federation.

The event will start at the Arroyo de la Miel Sports Centre at 9.30am and the runners will race though some of the spectacular beauty spots such as Arroyo Hondo, Cerro del Moro, Calamorro, and many others

It has been organized by the Benalmádena Alpine Group and is sponsored by the local Environment Agency,

It is expected that the event will attract around 200 competitors

Those taking part will be divided into three categories:

Juniors

Seniors

Veterans.

The race for seniors is the main event and will be 24km long In this event there’ll be prizes for the best three men and women racers in each category -trophies and 300, 200, or 100 Euros. The other two categories will face a shorter race (11km), awarding trophies to the best athletes.

The registration fee is 20 Euros. Registered runners will be entitled to free food and beverages, a souvenir, and a series of gifts. The placings will be determined according to a timekeeping system based on shoelace chips.
